A Brief History of G4SH, Expressing Gratitude & What’s in Store

Hi everyone! My name is Yesika Reyes (some of you may know me as Benny online) and I’m the founder of Gamers for Sandy Hook. When news first broke out about the Sandy Hook shooting, people including myself were expressing their grief and anger on their respective social media accounts. This tragedy affected me deeply mostly because I was always a kid at heart who loved to play and take care of children. To see their lives taken at such a young age saddens me to no bounds.   Yet, that doesn’t even come close to the grief the victim’ families and friends must be feeling. I desperately wanted to help like many others. Thus, I scoured online for ways to help and found numerous drives and fundraisers. Even after that, I was still fueled with drive to make a difference.

Consequently, my love for video games inspired me to create Gamers for Sandy Hook. It started out as a pitch I tossed around to my friends. Eventually, my friend Michael Zack and myself formally launched the fundraiser after discussing our shared drive to help our grieving brothers and sisters out. A few weeks later, we were joined by Chrissy Shepard, Jennifer Munoz, Nick Boreggo, and David Goman. Together, we spent most of our Christmas break writing e-mails and sending tweets to various figures in the video game industry hoping they can help us enact our vision. These individuals are some of the best people I have worked with. Each one of them carries their own bottle of passion, initiative, creativity and determination. Truly, the best team anyone could ever ask for.

We started out with a goal of $1,000 and even at that we thought it would be a significant challenge. However, after receiving numerous donations we elected to raise it to $5,000 mostly to grant an allowance. We were happy enough that we were able to do our part regardless if we reached our new goal of $5,000 or not. Yet, here we are with over $5,135 donations in total. It’s truly heartwarming to see this massive outpouring of generosity and kindness especially from fellow video game enthusiasts.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us! We appreciate every donation whether big or small. Every ‘share’ and ‘tweet’ means a lot to us as well. In addition, thank you to all our endorsers from the video game industry who like us poured their hearts out into G4SH! Mark Meer, Elias Toufexis, Kate Drummond, Sam Hulick, D.C Douglas, Gwendoline Yeo, Rana McAnear and Courtenay Taylor will always be heroes in our hearts.

To be honest, we were completely surprised by the flow of donations because we still had a couple of promos planned. Thankfully, we will still be able to accept donations until the end of March. Razoo will close all fundraisers for Sandy Hook around this date as well. We might have reached our goal now, but we are still continuing our efforts to raise as much as we can. So stick around for more promos and what not! G4SH will still be around.

Once again, thank you and good night!
